Newtown march on

Created on 18/08/2020 @ 11:24

Newtown maintained their winning start to the cricket season with a seven-wicket win over Alberbury in the John Rees Division One league.

With runs hard to come by, Craig Davies returned figures of 4-7 as Alberbury struggled to 88 all out, allowing opener Sam Morris (18no) and Tom Anderson (24no) to steer the hosts home.

Montgomery’s batsmen were in rampant form as they posted 247-5 at home to Ellesmere in the Shrewsbury & West Division Two.

Gareth Jones (66), Andrew Barker (53) and Aaron Ruff-Cock (80) all contributed to Monty’s impressive 247-5, before Tom Hughes took 4-36 to reduce the visitors to 147 all out for a 100-run win.

Welshpool maintained their emphatic form with a big win over Montgomery II in the Wales & West division.

Lance Parks (86), Dan Chodecki (42) and Russell Cadwallader (35) set the tone as Welshpool amassed a formidable 254-9, despite Rob Yewdall’s best efforts of 4-25.

Rob Anderson (4-13) and youngster Will Gannon (3-14) then tore through the Montgomery batting to whittle them out for just 52.

Guilsfield edged a tremendous match with Newtown II who had set a target of 120-8 for the villagers to chase.

It was looking tight at one stage, but veterans Rupert Shingler (19no) and Allan Williams (10no) held it together for the three-wicket win.

Llanidloes bowled Bishop’s Castle out for just 77, and cruised home for the loss of two wickets with Andrew Jones (40) top scoring.

Welshpool II completed a winning weekend for the club after Callum Preston smashed 76 and Neil Pryce added 43 to steer them to a target of 267 at Pontesbury II, who were dismissed for 113 in the Border division.
