10/08/2025 @ 10:42

A new community hub aimed at preventing suicide and supporting mental health has opened in Newtown.

Welsh Bikers for Suicide Prevention has set up its first base in Wales at the Vastre Estate. The charity brings people together through a shared interest in motorcycles, offering a safe place to meet, talk and learn new skills.

The Mayor of Newtown, Cllr Peter Lewington, and Deputy Mayor Cllr Margaret Lewington attended the official opening, which members of the local biking community also supported.

The hub will provide bike repair and maintenance workshops, as well as social activities and group ride-outs. Professional support will be available through links with Mental Health Motorbike, the Samaritans, and Blood Bikes.

Chairman Jeff Green said the aim is to give people companionship and purpose.

“We’re here to support, to listen, and to show that there’s always a road back, no matter how lost you feel,” he said.

The charity’s team includes Treasurer Helen Kidd, Secretary Pam Millar and Community Outreach lead Josie Greenslade.

The hub will serve as a base for activities across Wales.
