Newtown, Llani hope for home comforts

Newtown, no doubt smarting after last weekend's 34-12 defeat at struggling Bangor, face another stiff test when unbeaten Wrexham head to The Rec, writes Gary Williams from Oval Zone Rugby.

Newtown will have to be at their very best to get anything out of this Division One North game but some of their best performances this season have been when least expected and their supporters will be hoping this is one of those weeks.

Llanidloes, so close to a shock result last week against Mold, have the chance to put a stop to the recent revival of Colwyn Bay when they visit Cae Hafren. The Bay have had an inconsistent season and Llani know that if they can get a full strength team out and a decent start, that a win is within their grasp.

Welshpool host an Abergele side who, despite being in a lowly position in the league, have been improving as the season has progressed and enjoyed a fine win at Bangor midweek in the North Wales Bowl.

Coach Dai Roberts wants his team to play with the same passion as they did at leaders Rhyl last Saturday and believes that Pool have the firepower to get back to winning ways without underestimating what will be a fired up Abergele, seeking to pull clear of the relegation spots.

An added bonus for the club is that they will be fielding a second team on the same day, also against Abergele, an indication of the strength in depth that the club currently enjoys.

In Division One North, COBRA, buoyant after two consecutive wins, now face a daunting trio of games starting this week at Nant Conwy, followed by unbeaten champions Llandudno and a rejuvenated Bala. This week's opposition, Nant, have failed to reach their usual high standards this season but are still formidable opponents, especially on their own patch, and will be expecting to pick up the winning points.
