Rescue equine seeks home for more than a ‘one trick pony’

An equine rescue is appealing for a home for a talented pony who does not wanted to be treated like a machine or a one-trick pony.

Totem Horses, a not-for-profit rescue, based in Llanfechain is appealing for a special home for a talented pony called Holly, who is often in the ribbons, when it comes to competing in pony club type activities.

Holly, who is a 12.1hh (hand high) bay coloured Welsh section A mare, came to the charity, with her sister, about two years ago after her owner was no longer able to keep her.

But despite proving herself as a talented pony who is often in the ribbons, when it comes to winning gymkhana events - no one has yet come forward to offer her a suitable long-term loan home.

Totem's rehoming coordinator, Holly Higginbotham, who has ridden the pony that shares her name, said: "Holly is a very pretty and sweet little pony that has so much to offer we just can't believe no one has snapped her up yet.

"She is a speedy little pony when it comes to doing pony club games and she can also turn her hoof to popping a few jumps or enjoy a hack or fun ride - so she has a lot to offer but she is quite forward going and she can be strong at times so she needs a confident rider and is not suitable for a beginner.

Holly, who is 18-years-old, is looking for a home as a ridden second pony. She happily lives in (with daily turnout) or out and is fine with mares and geldings.

Holly has cushings disease and although she is not currently on medication it will need to be monitored and she will need to be clipped and rugged if in regular work so she doesn’t get too hot. Holly has had laminitis in the past and this will need to be monitored.

She is ridden in either a Parelli hackamore or snaffle and although strong she does have good brakes. She is generally good to catch and fine with the farrier and currently barefoot. She travels well in a trailer and is generally good to load but you need to take your time. Holly is safe enough for a child to lead and groom and although a second pony, she would be happy to occasionally give a lead-rein ride to a younger sibling.

Totem Horses places its equine in long term or permanent loan homes. Adoptions are subject to a home visit and an adoption fee. Although Holly is talented when it comes to mounted games, she will only be rehomed to someone where she will enjoy a variety of activities.

Holly said: "We don't want ponies to go to homes where people consider them as just games ponies or jumping machines, we think in order to have a good quality of life they need to enjoy a variety of activities and as well as being ridden they need lots of care and attentions and a massive helping of love."

Anyone interested in offering Holly a home is asked to contact Jo on 07899 831731 or emailadmin@totemhorse.org.uk . Details of other ponies looking for homes can be found atwww.totemhorse.org.uk
