Parcel scam warning issued to Newtown residents

09/12/2014 @ 06:37

Residents and businesses in Newtown and surrounding areas are being warned they could be targeted by a scam that could cost them £300.

Fraudsters are posting cards through house and business letter boxes saying they have tried to deliver a parcel. The card asks them to call a premium rate number that will cost them over £300 just for making the call.

Powys County Council’s Trading Standards Service and the Royal Mail are advising all to be aware of the scam which begins with a card from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service).

The card suggests that the company were unable to deliver a parcel and that they need to contact them on 0906 6611911.  But the number is a premium rate number and if any calls the number, they start to hear a recorded message and would have been billed £315 for the phonecall.

Cllr John Powell, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for Trading Standards, said: “With Christmas just around the corner, people are busy finalising their gift choices and are likely to use online retailers to purchase their goods.

“We want residents to be aware of this scam, especially if they have ordered goods online and expect them to be delivered to their address.  We would urge people to think carefully about whether or not they are expecting a package and is the information provided from the courier you are expecting to deliver the parcel.

“If you receive this card with the PDS details, please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 0207 239 6655.  We would urge people not to call any number stated on a card from PDS as the premium number may change.”

Anyone who receives a delivery card that includes a premium rate number but do not believe is genuine can contact PhonepayPlus on 0800 500 212 (Mon-Fri, 8am-6pm) for further guidance.
