Newtown High School commemorated the 80th anniversary of VE Day last week with a series of thoughtful events designed to honour the sacrifices made during World War II.

Students took part in activities that combined historical education with community celebration.

The day began with an assembly delivered by members of the school's Humanities Team. The assembly examined the importance of VE Day, the war's impact on civilian lives, and the significance of war memorials in Newtown and Prestige.

Throughout the day, themed lessons highlighted stories of resilience and bravery, allowing students to gain a deeper understanding of the values of peace and unity. The entire school community observed a poignant two minute silence to pay respect to those who fought for freedom.

Celebrations culminated in a lively street party where students shared picnic foods and enjoyed music from the 1940s era.

Mrs Havard, Acting Head Teacher on the Newtown Campus, said: "It is vital that we remember and celebrate the courage of those who came before us. VE Day represents not only the end of conflict but also the hope for a brighter future. Our students have shown great respect and enthusiasm in learning about this significant event in history."

According to the school, the success of the day's events has inspired discussions about making similar historical commemorations a regular feature of the school calendar, ensuring that future generations continue to appreciate the significance of these pivotal moments in history.
