St Giles’ juniors shone as bright as the Builth Wells sunshine at the weekend after qualifying for the Principality Junior Wales Open Final.
Connor Jones and Connor Owen showed their form at Builth Wells Golf Club to go through to the final which will be held at Celtic Manor Resort in the summer.
Meanwhile, the GUW team qualifier was a tight affair as the players battled it out for the eight qualifying spots available. Winning the event was Junior Captain Ryan Edkins with his solid 36 points, snatching victory from no fewer than six players a shot back.
Winning the card playoff and claiming runners-up spot was Jonny Smout, while juniors Jake Ottaway and the in-form Connor Jones make up the rest of the “A” team. Former club captains Andrew Stanley and Keith Dorrell, along with Alan Jones and Eddie Cadenne, qualified as the “B” team.
John Latham was victorious in the Seniors April Medal which was played in sunny but windy conditions. Latham fired an excellent one-under 69 to tame the course and claim a one-shot victory. Two players were tied with level par 70’s and the resulting countback placed John Gosnell in second. David Bebb finished third. These three players along with Graham Evans, Phil Trehearn and Alan Jones all received Golfer Of The Year points.
The Ladies GUW medal was brilliantly won by Betty James who scored a fantastic 72 in blustery conditions to claim victory from the Ladies Captain, Sheila Porter who finished as the runner-up with 77.
This Saturday is the J.T. Hughes (Honda) April medal with tee-off times at 9am and also at 1pm.
