Newtown's Shop Watch radio link scheme, launched as part of the town's Steal and Be Banned (SABB) is going from strength to strength having helped police make 12 arrests in the 10 weeks since it was launched.

Retailers throughout the town centre and neighbouring areas have joined the scheme which provides contact between retailers and the police, allowing crime to be tackled quickly and efficiently.PCSO Hannah Edwards

So far the scheme has helped arrest eight shoplifters, three people wanted on a no bail warrant and one person for a section 5 public order offence.

Scheme members have also informed each other of anti-social behaviour incidents such as youths throwing stink bombs in retail premises.

“This radio link has helped the Steal and Be Banned Scheme a great amount as all members are constantly keeping track on the location of banned persons,” said PCSO Hannah Edwards who helped establish the scheme. “This has helped to report SABB breaches and possibly prevented thefts.

“Members have also reported incidents of suspicious activity/persons via the radio link. I am very pleased how well the scheme is working. All members have been dedicated and professional which has made the scheme the success it is.”

And the retailers agree. “Shop Watch is a brilliant scheme and has brought Newtown retailers together as a team,” said Gareth Jones, manager at Argos. “We work and communicate well with Newtown Police which has resulted in 12 arrests in just 10 weeks. This is a great result which proves that the scheme is working and is worthwhile.”
