Committee backs £20,000 festive lights replacement

Newtown's festive lights are likely to be replaced next year at a cost of £20,000.

Newtown Town Council, which operates the lights, has been considering savings to prevent the Council Tax precept from rising too much next year.

At last week's full council meeting the Mayor, Cllr John Byrne said he backed replacing them.

Councillors had been told the lights were six years old and would be going out of their guarantee.

At a meeting of the Economy and Environment Committee on Monday evening, members agreed keep the £20,000 in the budget for the work.

Cllr Peter Lewington, said: "It could be a false economy not to improve them."

The committee supported keeping it in the 2024/2025 budget.
