Now Burger King wants to come to Newtown

Newtown is all set to become the fast food capital of Mid Wales with another major chain wanting to move into the town with a restaurant and drive-thru.

Burger King could be the latest fast-food giant to move into the town after McDonald’s, KFC, Greggs and Subway, creating 40 jobs.

Another major retailer could also move into the town, although it is known who this is. The company behind the Burger King wants to build another retail unit next to the restaurant.

A Midlands-based developer has submitted a planning application to build the drive-thru and restaurant on part of the Tesco supermarket car park.

The plans show the area being at the end of the car park near to the existing petrol station. It includes the drive-thru and another retail unit.

Burney Midlands Ltd has submitted the plans to Powys County Council. The company specialises in developing sites for the likes of Burger King and Starbucks, according to information obtained by MyNewtown. It is not known if they are the franchise holder or bring land forward for such developments.

The move could be seen as good for Newtown in advance of the opening of the bypass.

Many have warned that retailers could be hit with traffic being taken around the town, while others say it will be good, attracting more people in once traffic congestion is eased by the new road.

The plans will be considered by Powys County Council’s planning committee next month, with Newtown Town Council consulted and asked for its views this month.
