2,300 sheep presented at annual sheep sale

Local auctioneers and estate agents Morris Marshall and Poole said their annual Llanidloes Sheep Sale  presented over 2,300 sheep for sale last week.

The livestock on offer have been bred to the highest standard and are a real credit to producers. This was reflected by the number of people attending the traditional sale with purchasers coming from around Wales and England.

The sale was kindly sponsored by Clynderwen & Cardiganshire Famers (CCF).  CCF is a farmer owned co-operative trading across Wales and borders, providing a substantial range of farming products together with technical information and advice to customers.  

They awarded prizes to the winners as follows for the top price in each section:

Speckled, Beulah and Crossbred Ewes,  G Bound & Son, Cefn Bach

Welsh and Improved Welsh Ewes, D Jerman, Gwernau

Theave Lambs, E L Evans & Co. Green Farm

Rams (of all breeds), A Rees & Son, Tynllwyn

 Beulah, Speckled Face and Crossbred Ewes

A firm trade was seen this year in the Beulah, Speckled Face and Crossbred ewe department with 812 being entered.  Purchasers travelled from across the country together with local farmers to source the high quality of stock on offer. 

The record price was exceeded again this year with G Bound & Son, Cefn Bach selling a pen of 10 Beulah two year old ewes boasting size and colour to £300 purchased by Mr Jones of Maesderi, Llandeilo.  They formed part of an impressive run of 150 ewes with other pens selling to £270 and £240 to Mr Eric Hughes of High Park Farm.

J O Evans, Llidiart Carnau sold Beulah yearling ewes to £152 and £140 while P Jones & Son, Dolgwenith sold a run of two year old ewes to a top of £142.  Mrs S A Cherry, The Graig also obtained a strong following with Beulah yearling ewes selling to £135.  H G Rees, Hiriaeth sold Beulah two year old ewes to £140 with R T Davies & Son, Bwlchgarreg selling Beulah yearling ewes to £130.

Welsh and Improved Welsh Ewes

A brisk and vibrant trade was seen on the entry of 1,079 Welsh and Improved Welsh Ewes with purchasers again travelling far and wide to source the quality stock on offer.  Following fierce competition, top price for the Welsh section this year was obtained by Mr David Jerman, Gwernau selling three year old ewes to Mr Michael Davies of Caerafon, Caersws.  These formed part of an impressive total consignment of 290 ewes from one home.  Other pens sold to £168, £160 and £150.

A strong run of three year old ewes from C G Davies & Son, Tynpwll sold to £136, £130 and £128 while J M & A Jones, Wig sold three year old ewes to £128 and £120.  J O Evans, Llidiart Carnau sold a run of Welsh yearling ewes to £162, £160 and £140.

E T Bound & Co, Tynymaes sold a large run of three year old ewes selling to £128 with pens consistently selling from £112 - £125.  D Davies & Co, Pentremawr sold three year old ewes to £128 and £126.

Theave Lambs

A slightly reduced entry of 248 theave lambs entering the ring with E L Evans & Co, Green Farm taking the limelight realising the section’s top price of £92 for a pen of Beulah ewe lambs.  Welsh lambs from S F Jones, Malgwyn sold to £88 and consistently from £74 - £86 while J M & A Jones, Wig presented Welsh ewe lambs to a top of £84.

Multi-breed Rams

Another strong entry of 185 quality breeding tups in the multi-breed ram ring.  A vibrant demand was seen in the ring with top price achieved by Mr Arwel Rees of Tynllwyn for a crossbred yearling ram to selling to 1,800 guineas and purchased by Mr W Lewis, Cefn yr Hafodau.  A crossbred ram from the same home sold to 1,150 guineas and purchased by Mr Jones, Glyn. 

Speckle tups also received a good following selling to a top of 980 guineas to Mr Williams, Bwlchcrwys from H & S Watkins, Cammen Uchaf.  A speckle yearling tup from J M & A Jones, Wig sold to 720 guineas. 

Welsh rams received a steady trade with S F Jones, Malgwyn selling yearling rams to 470 and 400 guineas while J M & A Jones, Wig sold yearlings to 400 guineas.

A run of 26 strong Texel yearling tups from F & M J Williams, Cefngwilgy sold to a top of 940 guineas and traded from 350 to 600 guineas.  A P Davies, Blaen y Glyn sold Blue Faced Leicester rams to a top of 600 guineas and from 420 guineas to 510 guineas.
