Newtown is likely to become the site for Powys's only tree commemorating the Coronation of King Charles III.

Newtown Town Council is to hold talks with the Deputy Lieutenant of Powys, Mr Tony Evans, about a tree being planted to mark the occasion.

It followed a request to the town council from the Deputy Lord Lieutenant.

In a letter to the town council, he said: "...the Lord Lieutenant Mrs Tia Jones has asked me to look for a suitable site within Powys for the planting of a tree to commemorate the Coronation of King Charles III and I can think of no better place for the tree to be planted than in Newtown."

He added: "...it might be a suitable opportunity to request one of the Black Poplar cuttings from the Gravel car park tree which the town council have, I believe, taken to use as Coronation Tree to preserve this tree's genetics,a dn I think it would be wonderful story to tie together the Coronation and what the town council is doing here in Newtown."

He said there would be an official plaque and giard to protect the tree until it establishes itself.

Town councillors agreed the the Town Clerk taking forward the idea with the Deputy Lieutenant.
