Games medallist Dan calls it a day

Welshpool’s Commonwealth Games medallist Dan Jones has announced his retirement from competitive swimming, bringing an end to one of the most thrilling stories MyWelshpool has followed over the years.

Dan’s journey from promising youngster to Team Wales and the podium has been followed closely by our thousands of readers, but this morning the 30-year-old has decided to call time on his glorious career.

The double Commonwealth bronze medallist said that he hopes to remain within the sport as he pursues his Strength and Conditioning qualifications, and will remain in the Swansea area where he has been based since joining the elite swimming ranks.

He said: “After 20+ years in the sport, the time has come for me to retire from competitive swimming.

“It was always my dream to represent Wales at a Commonwealth Games. To achieve that dream not once, but twice - and to come away with two medals - is something I could never have imagined.

“Swimming has given me so much, incredible people, lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories and most importantly, my future wife - with the next chapter starting next week.

Dan went on to thanks the incredible support he has received and added that “I wouldn’t be where I am today without you, especially to my family who have backed me from day one”.

“I’m excited to stay within the sport while pursuing my Strength & Conditioning qualifications and hopefully, giving back to the sport that has given me so much by helping inspire the next generation of Welsh swimmers.”
