Cricket season ends with highs and lows

It was a summer of contrasting fortunes for the area’s cricket clubs and none more so than Newtown who suffered relegation heartbreak from the Premier League last week, but celebrated the Division Four title for their second XI this weekend.

And in a fantastic double for the area, Llanidloes will be joining them in Division Three after finishing second.

The two sides have dominated the division, and Newtown II finished in style with a six-wicket win over Priorslee. Skipper Jonathon Davies led the way with 5-33 and Russ Powell took 3-20.

Opener Mike Bellamore then capped a fine season with an unbeaten 50 to carry his bat through to victory.

Eogan Jones took 6-14 as Llanidloes finished with a flourish at Iscoyd & Fenns Bank, who were dismissed for just 74 chasing Llani’s 157 first innings score. Josh Hugo (45) and Rhys Jones (44) led the way with the bat.

Montgomery will be playing back in Division Two next season after relegation with their season ending with a defeat at Worfield II, who smashed 303-8. They were dismissed for 202.

Welshpool pipped Guilsfield & Llandrinio to third in Division Three following the villagers’ disappointing second half of the season ended in defeat at promoted Albrighton.

For Welshpool, they managed a winning draw over Church Aston after setting a target of 188-7 from their 40 overs. San Cadwallader top scored with an unbeaten 50.

Despite a big effort from the bowlers, Aston held out on 170-9 to deny Welshpool full points.

Twinkle Jose capped his brilliant first season with Guilsfield & Llandrinio by smashing 76 as the villagers made 177 all out at Albrighton.

Lewis Todd took 3-21 on his bowling return to the first team, but Albrighton made it home in the 39th over for the loss of five wickets.

Welshpool II finished their season above the Division Five relegation zone after Rupert Redway took 5-27 to bowl out Cae Glas for 140. Patrick Davies (54) then top scored to see Welshpool to safety in the 33rd over.

Montgomery II’s remarkable second half of the season form ended in victory to lift them to a fifth-place finish in Division Five.

Gaz Bromley was unbeaten on 71 as Monty posted 196-4, well out of reach for Alberbury II who could only muster 147 in reply. Tom Corfield took 4-33.
