Newtown out to boost promotion bid

Newtown, second in Division Two, travel to Dolgellau and should pick up the winning points against a side who now sit second from bottom, writes Gary Williams.

League leaders Mold were due to play at Llanidloes so it gives Newtown the chance to close the gap, but will still leave them with four games in hand.

Third-placed Rhyl, due to play at Dinbych, find themselves without a game because of a waterlogged pitch, which means Newtown can put some daylight between them and Rhyl in the race for the promotion spots.

Welshpool will be hoping that their recent run of improved performances will continue when they travel to Llangefni in Division One North.

When these teams met earlier this season at Maesydre, it was the visitors who ran out comfortable winners by 0-38.

However, in recent weeks, ‘Pool have proved a tougher nut to crack and, if they travel with their best fifteen, they should give ‘Gefni a tough challenge.

COBRA, also in Division One North, host second from bottom Colwyn Bay and will be hoping to halt their recent slump which hasn’t seen them win a game since before Christmas.

The Bay, desperate for points to avoid the drop, will see this as an opportunity to pick up points, but home advantage may well be the difference.

There was sad news in Division Two North as Llanidloes have pulled out of the league due to player shortage. The Hafren boys had endured a torrid season, losing all of their games and were in danger of not fulfilling their remaining fixtures. They will drop down to Division Three North East for next season.

Machynlleth host Teirw Nant in a game which, if Mach have their best team out, is too close to call.

In Division Three North East, COBRA’s second string, unbeaten so far this season, travel to bottom club Flint and will be expected do their promotion hopes no harm at all with a win on the road.
