What month it has been for St Giles youngster Rhys Edkins.
Not only has he made his mark on the winter Turkey Trails with the big boys, winning two competitions within three weeks, he proved his worth as one of the county’s top juniors by winning the Junior Open held at Llanymynech Golf Club.
Edkins set the pace with a whopping 49 points to win and also take the Stableford Order of Merit. Not to be outdone, his brother Ryan fired an impressive 83 gross to take the Gross Order of Merit with fellow St. Giles junior Jake Ottaway finishing runner-up.
Young Connor Owen won the Tee Peg Tour event by four shots, but he was pipped at the post for the Order of Merit title.
Back to Turkeys and Rhys won his latest bird on the weekend with 37 points to edge out Alan Jones and Lee Davies on the countback.
The seniors Turkey Trail was played as a two-man Texas Scramble and was brilliantly won by the “dynamic duo” of Keith Russell and Peter Donaway who scored 58. Second place on 61.5 came Bob Millard and Alan Forward whilst third went to Reg Thomas and David Bebb for their 62.
The ladies latest Christmas competition, played over 14 holes, was won by Winnie Latham with 26 points with Pam Lewis second on 20.
This weekend’s Turkey Trail is a two-man Texas Scramble with tee-off times at 9am on Saturday and Sunday morning and also at the earlier afternoon time of 12.30pm on Saturday.

Club Champion Marius Van Lill (9) also showed some steady play with a level par 68, edging out Jamie Davies (13) into third a shot back. The top two positions in the gross division were replicated with Davies and Van Lill some way ahead of the rest of the field. Big hitting lefty Brent Jones secured third.
The nine-hole Winter League finished off its first month of competition in very testing conditions, with Chris Jones (21) returning 16 stableford points to take first. Davies carded 15 points to take runner-up spot, just edging Simon Barker (14) into third on the count-back. The round four gross league results finished with Davies first, Barker second and Jones in third.
