Guilsfield manager Russell Cadwallader has returned to the transfer market this week in a bid to tighten up his leaking defensive line.
The village side’s revival from its early season blues has come to a sharp halt with three successive defeats, and new recruits are expected ahead of this weekend’s Huws Gray Alliance clash at Llangefni.
Tall defender Mike Parry has returned from two seasons captaining Rhos Aelwyd while Cadwallader is also on the trail of Berriew’s Mark Probert, brother of Guils midfielder Ian. Although Montgomery are also hopeful of snaring the big defender today.
Its puts pressure on the Cup winning centre half pairing of Jon Jones and James Henderson with the manager keeping his full squad on its toes.
“It’s all about competition for places really,” said Cadwallader. “We’re making a lot of basic individual errors and getting punished. It is very disappointing as I think we’ve got a tidy squad. Their attitude and willingness to be positive and work hard is commendable.
Meanwhile, Guilsfield will play a Mid Wales all-star XI on November 29 to officially open the lights. The all-star team will be managed by Montgomery boss Clive McNamee.
Tonight, Caersws travel to Cefn Druids looking to keep their tremendous run going while tomorrow, Llanrhaeadr host Penycae.
It is a big day in the Spar Division One where the top four sides face off in two matches that could dictate the season’s destiny.
High flying Waterloo Rovers travel to Rhayader but the match of the day sees Montgomery travel to Llanidloes with McNamee looking to refocus his troops after last week’s Welsh Cup exit.
“Obviously it is a top of the table clash which may have some bearing as to where the title ends up, but it is a bit early to call it a title decider,” said McNamee, who could well be boosted by the arrival of Probert and possibly Neil Pryce, who has recently stepped down as manager of Berriew.
“We are happy with our squad now and must go there with some optimism. It is far from a three-horse race (with Rhayader too). Any club can have a bad run just as any club can put a winning run together. I think the likes of Newbridge and possibly Waterloo could well surprise a few in the second half of the season.”
Also in Division One, Berriew travel to Tywyn Bryncrug with manager Mike Barton beginning his rebuilding by signing Ross Harris from Montgomery, George Clifton from Welshpool and former Guilsfield favourite Matt Newton has joined.
Carno take on another in form club in Newbridge. Welshpool Town have a free Saturday.
In Division Two, Four Crosses make the long journey to Talgarth while Llanfair United venture to Kerry. Llanfyllin host Aberaeron.
In the Emrys Morgan Cup, local amateur league sides will hope to do better than the area’s senior sides have done in the Welsh Cup and Trophy competitions when the competition enters the second round.
