It was a proud moment for the family of one young footballer who made history at Latham Park on Saturday.
With the clock running down and Newtown cruising to yet another JD Welsh Premier win over Caernarfon, the Robins bench signalled for a substitution to be made.
But this was not ordinary switch, because coming onto the field of play was Arnie Roberts, from Welshpool, who would make his debut at the age of just 15 years six months and nine days – the youngest ever in the league’s history.
The moment was captured best by club chairman Nick Evans who said: “It was a proud moment. Football is about making stories and this is right up there. I can remember taking Arnie on in our Newtown AFC Academy at the age of 11. He has raw talent and is now in the history books and showing the pathway for others to follow.”
