Rusty Newtown suffer opening defeat

Created on 27/04/2022 @ 14:16
Newtown suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Frankton despite winning the toss and electing to field in their opening Shropshire Division One game of the season.

A century from Frankton opener Lleyton Troskie (131) meant a long day in the field for the hosts despite Joe Monk taking 4-50 to trouble the visitors, who eventually made 246-6 from their 45 overs.

Newtown’s reply was rusty, with John Anthony top scoring on 18 as they were reduced to 93 all out in the 41st over.

Runs were hard to come by at Montgomery too as they struggled to 112 all out at home to Pontesbury in Division Two.

A mid-order 34 not out from Alex Haycock brought some respectability to the score but Monty failed to take a Pontesbury wicket in the 10-wicket defeat.

But Welshpool made it an opening day to remember with a dramatic late victory in Shropshire Division Three, securing their win at Willey with just a ball to spare.

After electing to field, Welshpool were set a target of 155-7 to chase after Rob Anderson (4-31) led the charge with the ball.

But it was touch and go in a thrilling response, with the game hanging in the balance going into the last over with only one wicket standing.

But victory came with the fifth ball with a mid-order 63 from Paul Chapman paving the way.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio had a baptism of fire in Division Four, suffering a six-wicket defeat in the wind of Condover.

After losing the toss, our normally dependable top order was blown away as they limped to 58-6, but a return to form by skipper Dave Lewis (30), guided them to a more respectable 112 all out.

The response started well with fast bowler Gary Meredith taking an early wicket, but an excellent 85-run second-wicket partnership took Condover to the brink of victory before Steve Griffiths (3-6) staged a late fightback which wasn’t enough.

A brilliant 5-39 from spinner Adrian Foulkes was a highlight as Llanidloes earned a draw at Allscot Heath in Division Five.

The hosts battled through to a healthy 208-8 and with that total soon appearing out of reach, Llanidloes dug in to bat out their 40 overs for 172-6. Foulkes (44) and Will Denham (43) top scored.

Newtown II also held out for a draw after being set 190 all out by Iscoyd & Fenns Bank. Danny Foulkes (4-56) and spinner Pail Hawthorn (3-31) did most of the damage.

Opener Adam Knight (64) led the response but it fell off the pace and ended short on 158-7 which was ebough to give Newtown II a healthy 10 points.

Montgomery II could only muster 81all out and went down to an eight-wicket defeat at Cound II in Division Six.

Ryan Preston (63), Dave Whitehouse (59) and Dale Evans (40) were among the runs as Welshpool II amassed a whopping 255-3 at home to Cae Glass II.

But the hosts couldn’t get the victory their batting performance deserved with the visitors holding on for 99-6.
