It's derby day on rugby field

27/11/2021 @ 09:18

It’s almost fifty years to the day since Newtown RFC reformed and their first opponents were Welshpool who travelled to Newtown High School and came away with a convincing 9-31 win.

The current generation of Maesydre men will be looking to emulate that win as they lock horns with their great rivals today with both sides looking for that all-important first win in the league.

With both teams suffering heavy defeats in their opening league games last weekend, they will know how important this weekend’s game is.

Welshpool’s coach, Dai Roberts, is looking forward to the challenge and has a near full strength squad.

He stated: “After defeating Newtown at home a few months ago in one of our best performances for a number of seasons, we were bitterly disappointed to find ourselves on the end of a fairly heavy defeat at the Rec on the return fixture.

“This Saturday’s game allows the boys to show that last performance was an off day and I expect a massive improvement.”

In Division Three North, we have another derby with Machynlleth hosting Llanidloes. Both sides started the season with a win last week, Machynlleth away at Menai Bridge and Llanidloes at home against Mold 2nds, so the winner on Saturday will be sitting pretty amongst the league leaders.

COBRA, devastated after last Saturday’s 10-11 home defeat against current North Wales champions, Llandudno, have an away trip to Denbigh where they hope to bounce back. The Meifod team will be looking to continue their good form and get themselves in to a healthy position in the Division One North league table.

Newtown Youths entertain Denbigh Youth in the first leg of the North Wales Youth Shield Final whilst COBRA Youths entertain Nant Conwy Youths in the semi-final of the North Wales Youth Cup. We wish both sides the best of luck.

On Sunday, COBRA Ladies entertain Abergele Ladies in the North Wales Women’s League with a 2.30pm kick off.

A great weekend of Mid Wales rugby lined up.
