Newtown up to third

Another tremendous bowling performance saw Newtown move up to third in the Henshalls Shropshire League Division One with a comfortable win over Worfield II.

Tom Anderson, Reino de Klerk, Ally Laird and Sam Cooke all took a pair of wickets each as the visitors were reduced to 140 all out.

Anderson then smashed 61 not out to steady the mid-order and steer his side home in the 32nd over with just four wickets lost.

Resurgent Montgomery continue their mid-season Division Two form with an impressive run chase at home to Oswestry II.

After being set 223-8 off 45 overs, Aaron Ruff-Cock hit an unbeaten 83 with plenty of support from Andrew Barker (42) and Charles Clinton (27) to see Monty through to a seven-wicket win in the 43rd over.

Skipper Russell Cadwallader hit an unbeaten 72 and Mat Sherwood smashed 41 not out, but it wasn’t enough as Welshpool succumb to a Division Three defeat at Church Aston.

The pair helped Welshpool set a decent target of 203-5 after electing to bat, but the hosts enjoyed the conditions too and despite a pair of wickets for Joe Cadwallader, they made it home with just four wickets down and plenty of overs left in the tank.

David Williams moved to the top of the Division Five batting charts with his first century for Guilsfield & Llandrinio as they opened up a 59-point lead at the top at the LHG Oval.

Set 164-8 to chase by Alberbury II, with Steve Griffiths (2-10) the pick of the Guilsfield attack, Williams spearheaded the response with an unbeaten 103, sharing a strong first wicket partnership with Andy Pugh (38) as they reached victory in the 25th over.

Llanidloes are up to second in Division Six after a tremendous run-chase at Cound II.

Set an imposing 241-7 by their hosts, Will Denham followed up his earlier three-wicket haul with 56 and Rob Davies added 66 from mid-order to propel Llanidloes to a nail biting one-wicket victory and keep their title hopes very much alive.

Wicketkeeper-opener Matt Jones hit 71 for Montgomery II, but it wasn’t enough as his side slumped to a four-wicket defeat at Boomer Heath II.

Monty’s 152-8 was always going to be tough to defend and despite two wickets apiece for Dave Jones and Tom Corfield, victory was secured by the hosts in the 35th over.

Welshpool II closed the gap on the top two in Division Seven after Neil Pryce (46), Chris Proctor (42), Ryan Preston (41) and Dale Evans (40) were all in the runs as they posted 246-6 from their 40 overs for Ludlow to chase.

It proved well out of reach, with Rupert Redway (3-14) leading the way as the visitors crumbled to 65 all out.
