Local clubs march on at the top
Joe Monk (3-24) was the pick of the Newtown bowlers as Chirk amassed a decent looking 161 all out by the 36thover.
The chase went right to the wire, with Ryan Davies (48) propping up the reply from mid-order before Monk (20no) and John Anthony (12no) held together a 33-run ninth wicket partnership to steer Newtown home in the last over.
With two matches remaining, Newtown are clear at the top with eight wins from eight matches.
Despite setting a decent looking target of 168-4, Montgomerywere beaten at home by Sentinel II in the Shrewsbury and West league.
Aaron Ruff-Cock (65no) and Andrew Barker (38) were the main contributors, but the visiting batsmen also took a liking to the track by securing victory in the 37thover for the loss of five wickets, three of which were taken by Charlie Kinsey.
Llanidloesedged a low scoring victory over Welshpool to take over at the top of the Wales and West division.
There were three wickets apiece for Harry Turner and Ryan Jones as Welshpool struggled to 53 all out, but it wasn’t a straight forward reply as the Pool bowlers fought back. Llanidloes eventually limped to victory with just two wickets to spare.
Guilsfield & Llandrinioreturned empty handed from Bishop’s Castle having set the hosts 102 to chase. Despite early successes, Castle secured the points in the 23rdover for the loss of four wickets.
Montgomery IIearned a much-needed victory after setting Newtown IIa target of 147 to chase, thanks largely to Rob Yewdall’s 41. Skipper David Jones then changed the game with 5-2 from four overs to pull off a comfortable 70-run victory.
Welshpool IIremain top of the Border league after a nail biting two-wicket win over second-placed Alberbury, who posted just 88 after being put in to bat.
The hosts made hard work of the chase, sealing victory in the 28thover thanks to the steady hand of man-of-the-match Tom Bowen who followed up his three wickets with a top score of 25.
