Old rivals squaring up
In Division Two North, unfortunately Welshpool, Newtown and Llanidloes all lie at the wrong end of the table, occupying three of the bottom five places.
The eagerly-anticipated Mid Wales derby between Welshpool and Newtown takes place at Maesydre and a win for Pool will see them leapfrog their neighbours and move up a place in the league table. Having seen both teams in action a number of times this season, I’m expecting a close final score.
Llanidloes, just one place above bottom club Abergele, face a tough away trip to take on unbeaten Rhyl who are joint leaders of the Division with Mold. Hopefully due to the enforced break, the Hafren boys will have some of their injured players back on the field and hopefully a full complement will be heading north.
In Division One North, also languishing near the foot of the table, COBRA face a tricky fixture at Llangefni who are on a bit of a roll, having won their last two fixtures. COBRA have two games in hand on Bro Ffestiniog and Dolgellau, the two clubs immediately above them and they will be hoping to return from the Island with points of some sort.
Newtown Youth have a great chance to progress in the WRU National Youth Plate as they entertain Penclawdd at The Rec in Round 2. Mid Wales are well represented in this competition with Builth Wells hosting Haverfordwest and Aberystwyth travelling to Carmarthen Quins. Best wishes to them all.
In the North East Wales Youth Division, COBRA host Wrexham and will be looking to make it three wins out of four games and nudge further up the league which currently has Mold top with 13 points, Newtown second with 12 points, Wrexham third with 11 points and COBRA fourth with 10 points. Couldn’t be closer!
On Sunday, in the North Wales Women’s League, it’s the big shootout between the two remaining unbeaten sides as COBRA head to Caernarfon for what should be a thriller of a game. Both sides have won four out of four this season. Definitely a game that Grace Johns, from Welshpool and now playing for Caernarfon, will be looking forward to as she goes up against many of her friends from COBRA.
