Become a firefighter in Newtown

06/05/2026 @ 03:55

A recruitment drive to attract more on call firefighters in the Newtown area is being launched by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service next month.

The fire service will hold a Firefighter Experience Day at Newtown Fire Station on Friday, June 5, as part of efforts to encourage more people to consider joining the service.

The event comes as on call firefighters continue to play a major role in providing emergency cover across mid Wales, with around 75 per cent of Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service stations staffed entirely by on call crews.

People attending the Newtown session, which runs from 10am until 1pm, will be able to take part in practical activities, try on firefighting kit and speak directly with firefighters about the realities of the role.

A statement said: “If you’ve ever thought about becoming a Firefighter, our Experience Days are a friendly, no-pressure way to find out more before you apply.”

The service added that visitors will be able to “try on firefighting kit, learn how to assemble equipment, and take part in a practical exercise”.

Attendees will also receive information about the recruitment process, required fitness standards and career pathways within the fire service.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service covers nearly two thirds of Wales, responding to emergencies across almost 12,000 square kilometres.

A second experience day will also be held at Haverfordwest Fire Station on June 3.
