Hospitality businesses in Newtown are being encouraged to apply for a business rates relief scheme that could reduce their costs during the current financial year.
Powys County Council has launched the Business Rates Food and Drink Hospitality Rates Relief scheme for 2026/27, offering a 15 per cent discount on business rates for eligible businesses across the county.
The scheme, funded by the Welsh Government, has a total allocation of £197,000 and could support up to 200 businesses. Pubs, bars, restaurants, cafés and live music venues are among those that may qualify.
For businesses in Newtown’s hospitality sector, the support could provide some relief at a time when many continue to face rising costs and ongoing economic pressures.
The discount applies to eligible ratepayers, with a maximum total relief cap of £110,000 across all business properties. However, businesses must apply to receive the support.
The scheme will run until 31 March 2027.
Jane Thomas, Powys County Council’s Director for Corporate Services, said: “It continues to be a difficult time for businesses in the food and drink hospitality sector. This scheme supports businesses in these sectors so I would urge those who are eligible for this discount to apply for it as soon as possible.”
Further details, including how to apply, are available on the council’s website.
