Newtown prepares for 2025 Remembrance events

23/10/2025 @ 06:16

Plans for this year’s Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday commemorations in Newtown have been confirmed.

The annual events, organised by Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council in partnership with the Royal British Legion, the RBL Chaplain Rev Nia Wyn Morris, Newtown Silver Band, and the RAF Cadets, will follow a similar format to last year.

Remembrance Sunday will take place on 9 November, with a civic parade and wreath-laying ceremony at the town’s cenotaph on Broad Street. The Mayor will lay a wreath on behalf of the community, followed by representatives of local organisations. The Vice Lord Lieutenant will also lay a wreath on behalf of His Majesty The King.

The ceremony will include readings, the calling of names of the fallen, and the national anthems before the parade moves back through the town centre. The Town Council will host a post-parade buffet at the Monty Club for participants.

Armistice Day will follow on Tuesday, 11 November, with a shorter ceremony at the War Memorial Gardens. Local school pupils from six primary schools will once again take part, reading names from the war memorial and laying wreaths.

Both events will be broadcast live online, and short road closures will be in place to allow for the commemorations.

The Town Council has set aside £850 from its civic budget to cover costs, including the public address system, wreath and refreshments.
