An evening of stargazing and science marked a new chapter for a local astronomy group as it unveiled a new name at its latest meeting.
The former Newtown Astronomy Society has now become the Mid Wales Astronomy Society / Cymdeithas Seryddiaeth Canolbarth Cymru, reflecting the wide area its members come from across Powys and beyond.
The change was introduced at the group’s first meeting of the 2025/26 season last Saturday (13 September) at Plas Dolerw in Newtown.
The evening featured a guest talk by Jane Clark on “Experiments in the Infrared”, showing how amateur astronomers can capture images in infrared light to reveal celestial phenomena invisible to the naked eye. Jane, who has published four books on amateur astronomy, shared case studies and personal experiences of her work.
The meeting also included the group’s regular “What’s on in the month ahead” feature, presented by Tony Cook from Aberystwyth University, rounding off the evening with a look at upcoming highlights in the night sky.
Chairperson of the newly named society said the rebrand better represents its reach and ambitions. “We have members from across Mid Wales, and we want to make sure anyone with an interest in astronomy, whatever their age or experience, feels welcome,” they explained.
The society continues to host monthly meetings on the second Saturday of each month at Plas Dolerw, with talks, practical sessions and a chance to meet others with an interest in the night sky.
