The controversial active travel bridge connecting both sides of the River Severn in Newtown has finally opened to pedestrians and cyclists after months of delays.
Construction firm JN Bentley completed the major works on the steel, single-span structure, which links the riverside path and communities west of the River Severn to Pool Road on the east side. The bridge also provides access to a new outdoor gym installed on the Pool Road side.
The project, funded by the Welsh Government with support from Transport for Wales, was originally identified in Active Travel Network Maps produced several years ago. However, the bridge has taken significantly longer to complete than initially anticipated, testing the patience of local residents who have been waiting for improved connectivity between the two sides of town.
Councillor Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, acknowledged the delays whilst highlighting the bridge's potential benefits. "We would like to thank the local communities for their patience whilst this bridge has been built. It is our most ambitious active travel development yet. We appreciate that it has taken longer than anticipated and are pleased that it is finally open for people to use."
The bridge aims to encourage residents to make short journeys to work, school, or local shops by bicycle or on foot rather than by car. Councillor Charlton explained that the infrastructure would "help improve access to the town centre to support local business, leisure facilities and much more."
The development follows extensive consultation with residents, community groups, schools, families, and other stakeholders during the planning process, with their feedback helping to shape proposed active travel routes throughout Powys.
Despite the bridge now being open for public use, minor remedial work will continue over the coming weeks. However, these finishing touches will not affect public access to the crossing.
An official opening ceremony is planned for later this year, with details to be announced closer to the date. The completion of this project represents a significant milestone in Powys Council's efforts to promote sustainable transport options and improve connectivity within Newtown.
