Osteoporosis sufferers offered free yoga event

04/06/2025 @ 12:19

A specialist yoga teacher will demonstrate gentle exercises designed for people with osteoporosis at a free community session in Newtown next week.

Helen Oughton, a qualified yoga instructor from Manchester who has osteoporosis herself, will lead the session on Friday, 6th June at 2pm at Newtown Methodist Church on Back Lane.

The event, organised by the Royal Osteoporosis Society Support Group, will focus on chair-based yoga techniques that protect bones whilst improving posture, flexibility, balance and strength.

Ms Oughton has developed her teaching methods specifically for people with the bone thinning condition, which affects over three million people in the UK. Her approach aims to help sufferers maintain their quality of life through safe, targeted exercise.

The session will take place at Newtown Methodist Church, located opposite Back Lane car park and the bus station.

Organisers say everyone is welcome to attend, regardless of whether they have osteoporosis or are simply interested in learning more about the condition. Admission is free and light refreshments will be provided.

Information pamphlets about osteoporosis will also be available at the event.

The Royal Osteoporosis Society runs support groups across the UK to provide information and practical help for people affected by osteoporosis and those at risk of developing the condition.
