A young footballer who worked in a Newtown restaurant has been killed in a car crash on a main road.

Andrew Lloyd, 21, died when a green Peugeot 306 and a blue Kia were involved in the crash on the A483 in Mid Wales.

Mr Lloyd, from Forden, near Welshpool, died at the scene of the accident.

Tributes today poured in for Mr Lloyd, who played for Forden United and worked at McDonalds restaurant in Pool Road, Newtown.

A statement released by the club said: “RIP to a top player and friend sadly missed by management and players at Forden United. Such a sad loss, all at the club would like to send our love to the family at this time.”

The accident happened between Newtown and Berriew at 10pm on Saturday. Dyfed-Powys Police today appealed for witnesses who may have seen the two cars before the accident to come forward.

Officers were unable to confirm if Mr Lloyd was driving one of the two cars at the time of the accident.

Welsh Ambulance Service sent two vehicles, an officer and a basic doctor to the accident and took one patient to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Tributes to Mr Lloyd were today posted on Facebook, with Nichola Wain, who is listed as Mr Lloyd’s girlfriend, posting: “I am devastated. You always had a cheeky grin on your face baby, and I’m never going to forget that.

“I’ve been in one hell of a mess. I know you wouldn’t like seeing me in this state but I can’t help it. If I could have one thing right now that would be you. I want you back so badly Andy.”

Another post from Jeremy Everton said: “The world has lost a fantastic young man.”
