Swimmers from Maldwyn Leisure Centre’s Training Zone in Newtown recently completed a Swimathon in aid of the North Powys Kidney Patients Assocation (NPKPA), raising a total of £1,123 in the process.

Glyn Davies, MP for Montgomeryshire, has congratulated swimmers who have completed the swimathon at the leisure centre.

The group of 12 meet weekly, along with many other keen local swimmers, under the direction of coach Sam Williams.

Staying in the pool for a little longer, Rob Lazenby undertook twice the distance and swam a mammoth 10k (400 lengths) in just 2 hours 51 minutes.

Congratulating the swimmers who took part, Mr Davies said: “The way in which local groups have come together to support people with kidney disease never ceases to amaze me.

“The money raised will all be used improve the lives of people who use the new dialysis unit a Welshpool Hospital.”

Chair of the NPKPA Helen Corbett said: “We were delighted that Maldwyn Training Zone chose to support the Kidney Patients Association in this way.

“What the 12 swimmers achieved was truly remarkable and we are indebted. I can assure them that the money raised will be put to good use supporting kidney patients in Montgomeryshire.’
