Police today took the unusual step of releasing a picture of a street entertainer convicted of raping a woman in Newtown because they want more victims to come forward.
Police fear the man could have attacked more victims. Detectives today took the unusual step of releasing a photograph of Steven Beeks in the hope other victims will come forward.
The 50-year-old was a familiar figure on the streets of Wales performing as a silver-painted “living artist”.
He was jailed for seven years at Caernarfon Crown Court after he was found guilty of one count of rape in Newtown and one of causing actual bodily harm in Shrewsbury.
He will also be required to register as a sex offender and will be subject to monitoring for the rest of his life.
He was arrested during an investigation codenamed Operation Siberia which began in September 2012.
Detective Inspector Diane Davies said Beeks, a “transient individual”, who “travelled extensively throughout the country” may have more victims.
She said: “I am taking the unusual steps of releasing his image into the public domain in the belief that there may be other victims of crime that have yet to be identified by the investigation team.
“The nature of sexual abuse is such that it is rarely witnessed, it mostly happens behind closed doors and in circumstances that make it very difficult for victims to disclose their ordeal.
“I would encourage anyone who has concerns regarding Mr Beeks to contact their local police, and they will be advised on their options and support services available to them.
“I would like to take the opportunity to thank the people who have assisted the investigation, particularly the ladies who gave evidence at court. They showed immense courage and resilience, they know who they are.”
