Newtown is counting down to the return of its annual food festival which will take over the Town Hall Grounds in just two weeks time.
The Newtown Food Festival, now in its 11th year, will be held on the weekend of Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 September and promises a packed programme of food, drink, music and entertainment. Organisers say the free event will showcase the best of local producers alongside live music, a children’s village and a host of street food vendors.
As well as the popular producers’ marquee and food-to-go stalls, the Festival Kitchen will feature live cookery demonstrations throughout the weekend, giving visitors the chance to see chefs in action and pick up new skills and ideas. A wide variety of food and drink will be on offer, from artisan cheeses and baked goods to international street food, craft ales and spirits.
Music is at the heart of the event and this year’s line-up spans everything from folk and choral to blues, ska and jazz. On Saturday, entertainment will run from the morning right through until midnight, with performances by groups including Monty Folk, Newtown Musical Theatre Company, Chameleon and BC All Skas. Sunday’s programme will bring a more relaxed atmosphere, with sets from Severnside Jazz Band, Hafren Community Choir and Newtown Silver Band among others.
The dedicated children’s village will once again provide free activities and entertainment for younger visitors, making the festival a family day out as much as a food and drink showcase. Organisers are also highlighting the launch of a new mobile app this year to help people plan their visit, with maps, exhibitor information and schedules available at the tap of a button.
Mayor of Newtown, Cllr Peter Lewington, said the festival had become a “showpiece for the town” and was an important part of Newtown’s cultural calendar. “It’s a chance to celebrate local food and drink, enjoy great music and bring the community together. We look forward to welcoming visitors from near and far once again this year,” he said.
Parking will be available in the town’s car parks, all within walking distance of the festival site. Entry is free, with support from Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council and other local partners helping to make the event possible.
