Housing development to have a new name

A housing development under construction in Newtown is likely to be called Plas Melinydd.

Developers of the former Travis Perkins site in New Road has proposed Millers Place as the name.

But Newtown Town Council had suggested a Welsh name and put forward Lle Melin or Lee Melinwry as part of a consultation by Powys County Council.

The county council has now written back saying the suggestion "is welcomed" but the translation is too literal.

A letter to the town council, said: "‘LLE’ would not be used as a formal name for a location in this context. Lle is too general and an alternative, used frequently in location names, would be ‘PLAS’. 

"‘PLAS’ is essentially an open space in an urban area.Also a more suitable translation of Miller for the purposes of a place name, would be ‘MELINYDD’.With all this in mind, the name of ‘PLAS MELINYDD’ has been suggested."

The town council's Economy and Environment Committee will consider the suggestion next week.
