A former Newtown student has revealed a new and free science festival for the town aimed at schoolchildren.

Jamie Dumayne, now a PhD student at Lancaster University, has announced the Newtown Science Festival will take place at the town's high school on 17 September.

It's a free science event for schoolchildren.

"The event will bring together a wide collection of different science organisations, covering areas such as hydrogen cars, vertical farms and astronomy. Although the event is aimed at children aged 7-16, the festival is open to all and anyone who has an interest in science will find it enjoyable," said Jamie.

"The festival will include an exhibition room, with hands on science activities, as well as talks throughout the day on topics such as the James Webb Space telescope and how particle physics discoveries are similar to learning the rules of a sport. There will also be a planetarium for visitors to get a chance to see the wonders of the universe up close."

Jamie added: "I grew up in mid Wales, where science activities are virtually non-existent. Now that I'm a PhD student I want to change that.

"I'm bringing together a diverse group of exhibitors, to show children from rural backgrounds that it is possible for them to pursue a career in science. This science festival is going to be a great chance for kids to see the exciting science happening now. Our experts will be able to explain to you their area of science, through fun activities, regardless of your science background."

There will be support from many universities, including Aberystwyth, Cardiff, Chester, Lancaster, Swansea and Wrexham Glyndwr, as well as a collection of local businesses.

The event is being funded by the Royal Astronomical Society and Lancaster University's Physics department.
