Newtown has a new mayor and deputy mayor.

Cllr John Byrne (pictured) is the mayor and Cllr Mike Childs is the deputy mayor. They were elected at this week's annual meeting of the town council.

Former mayor, Richard Williams, could not stand as a town councillor at the local elections, but he provided a retiring speech in which he thanked councillors for their support.

He said: "The past year has been an interesting time, not just locally but nationally. We’ve seen the end of Covid-19 restrictions in almost all areas of life and we are back to
some normality on meetings and events.

"However, the challenges of the pandemic still remain and I am sure you will do all you can to continue to support and provide services to residents and visitors. Many events have taken place during the last 12 months, but a highlight for me has to be our Kicking off Christmas event.

"It was fantastic to see so many people in person once again, having a fantastic time in our amazing green spaces.

"The Council has a lot of very exciting opportunities ahead and I look forward to viewing the next 5 Year Plan which I am sure will continue to make Newtown the best place to live, work, play and visit."
