Chancellor and ministers drop into Newtown

22/05/2022 @ 10:29
Newtown was last night the destination for a number of senior Conservative ministers, including the Chancellor Rushi Sunak MP.

They were attending the second day of the Welsh Conservatives conference at The Hafren in town as well as a dinner held later in the evening.

Mr Sunk, who was today named as one of the wealthiest people in The Sunday Times Rich List along with his wife Akshata Murphy, took part in a health debate before meeting party members.

Montgomeryshire's Member of the Senedd, Russell George and MP Craig Williams, lead on several discussions and speeches.

They were also joined by Sajid David MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and former Foreign Secretary and local resident, Lord Hague.

Mr George said he was pleased Montgomeryshire and Mid Wales had hosted the conference which saw Prime Minister Boris Johnson drop in on the event on Friday.

Mr George, who is Shadow Health Spokesperson at the Senedd, stressed the need to support GPs so there is better access to them, which will relieve pressures on A&E departments which recently recorded their worst-ever waits in Wales.

He mentioned the necessity for e-prescribing in Wales while it has been in place in England and Scotland for several years. Javid said the UK Government had regularly asked the Labour Government in Cardiff Bay whether they would like the same system, but ministers turn them down.

This results in hours of GP time being wasted and patients waiting much longer than necessary. George and Gulhane visited a pharmacy in Newtown this morning to discuss the issue.
