Newtown's Platinum Jubilee celebrations planned for High Street next month have had to be cancelled.

The celebrations had been planned for High Street in Newtown. But the town council, which was organising the event over the Bank Holiday weekend, said they were having to cancel the event due to the ongoing works.

They are instead organising an event in conjunction with The Elephant and Castle Hotel in Broad Street.

"With plans for celebrations on High Street unable to proceed due to the ongoing works, we are delighted to announce alternative celebration plans have been arranged in conjunction with Elephant and Castle Hotel," said a statement from the town council.

"Starting at 12pm on Friday, 3rd June 2022, the afternoon will begin with family entertainment and activities in the hotel gardens. Refreshments will be available to purchase

"The traditional tea dance will take place from 3pm in the function room, incorporating traditional war time music and dances. Live music from Newtown Silver Band and other local musicians."

The statement added: "The cost to join the Tea Dance is £5.00 per person. Booking is not required but encouraged. Guests will still be welcome to join on the day without booking or registering a space.

"For those wishing to participate in the Tea Dance please register your interest by contacting the Elephant & Castle on 01686 626271 or emailing lisa.morris@elephantandcastlehotel.co.uk ."
