Canal investment celebrated at the Welsh Parliament

Work that could eventually open up the Montgomery Canal to near Newtown has been celebrated in the Senedd.

The successful finding committed by the UK government to reconnecting the canal to the English network was raised by Montgomeryshire Member of the Welsh Parliament, Russell George.

Short debates allow Members of the Senedd, other than a member of the government, to have a general debate on any type of topic of interest which may relate to a constituency matter.

During the debate, Mr George outlined the achievements of local individuals, volunteers, and organisations, and spoke of the wider regeneration that the restoration of the canal will bring.

Mr George said: "I was pleased to be selected to bring a subject of my choice for debate in the Senedd, and I was keen to outline the huge benefits of restoring the Montgomery canal and to also shine a light on the efforts of passionate local individuals, volunteers and organisations who have worked extremely hard to restore the canal.

"In the debate I was able highlight the rich history of the canal, and how it served communities such as Llanymynech, Welshpool, Garthmyl and Newtown. I also expressed the major benefits of the project such as increased employment opportunities from new and expanded businesses in the local area. This of course will be aided by the additional increase in tourism."

He added: "There is now a huge opportunity for mid Wales, as further private investment is now likely to be attracted to Mid Wales. The canal offers further potential for boosting our local economy and preserving our heritage is a further added bonus and provides Mid Wales with a further unique selling point."

The Montgomery Canal Partnership and Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust have been campaigning tirelessly for many years to restore sections.

The Chancellor's £15.5 million Levelling Up funding announcement gave a boost to the campaign last November, and the agreement of the Mid Wales growth deal is now likely to provide funding to the rebuilding of two road bridges needed to bring the two restored sections together.

Mr George added: “As a result of recent funding announcement, we will now have the restoration of the canal from Welshpool close to the English boarder.

"The ultimate aim is to restore the canal all the way to Newtown, and I ended the debate by talking about the momentum we now have to press on with plans to restore the canal to Newtown.

"I was pleased that the Minister responsible, responded positively to my contribution."
