'Rain garden' included in car park improvements

22/01/2022 @ 09:05
Work will start on Monday resurfacing Newtown's Gravel and Gas Street car parks, along with the creation of a 'rain garden.'

The work will take eight weeks and will see the Gas Street car closed and a one-way system introduced around the car park.

It will include new kerbs, relining, and a widening of the junction and road leading into the car park.

Motorists and users of the car park have complained of large pot holes and uneven surfaces over recent years throughout the car park.

It has been many years, decades, since any significant work was undertaken in the car park.

"We can confirm that works to improve Gas Street car park and the junction with Gravel car park will begin on Monday 24 January," said a council spokesperson.

"The works will take approximately eight weeks, during which Gas Street car park will be closed, but Gravel car park will remain open.

"Whilst the work to the junction is taking place, there will be a one way system introduced which will be fully signposted."

The works will include:

Junction and carriageway leading to junction from car park to be modified and widened to allow easier access and egress from both directions.

Newly installed kerbs and edging around Gas street car park.
Gas street Car park to be resurfaced and re-lined, creating easier access and a safer car parking environment.

Installation of rain garden along boundary (river side). This will act as a surface water drainage soakaway but softened with subtle landscaping.
