Activists to descend on Newtown town centre

Activists are set to descend on Newtown town centre today (Saturday) to protest about the UK Home Secretary’s ‘Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts’ (PCSC) Bill.
Representatives attending the High Street protest will include Montgomeryshire Labour Party, Plaid Cymru Maldwyn, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, and Extinction Rebellion.
They are expected to march around the town centre before heading to the Town Hall grounds.
A spokesperson said: "The PCSC Bill will shortly leave the House of Lords on its way to becoming a completed Act of Parliament, which led the ‘Kill the Bill’ movement to call a National day of action this Saturday, including demonstrations in London, Cardiff and elsewhere in the UK.
‘Kill the Bill’ protests against the PCSC Bill have been occurring across the UK since early 2021.
The spokesperson said: "The 300-page Bill makes a wide variety of changes to the justice system in England and Wales, from tougher sentences for killer drivers to provisions allowing court appearances over video conference.
"Many aspects of the Bill have caused controversy, including the expansion of police powers to deal with protests, more stop-and-search, and laws about encampments that critics - including human rights group Liberty - say will persecute Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities in the UK."
Local environmental activist David France said about the protest: "This may have been one of the last legal protests we see in England and Wales.
"I am overwhelmed by the sheer volume of terrifying legislation coming from this Government: the PCSC Bill, the Nationality and Borders Bill, the Elections Bill, the Overseas Operations Bill. I imagine there are more I don’t know about, but I don’t really want to look."
