Local police officers have faced more than 238 coronavirus-related attacks, it has emerged.

Dyfed Powys Police said the attacks were recorded between February and November last year.

It has resulted in pixie officials calling for tougher sentences on perpetrators.

The attacks included people deliberately coughing, spitting or biting officers.

The force recorded 19 positive coronavirus cases last year up to December.

“Those who attack emergency workers have a complete lack of respect for anything or anybody. Without doubt, we are living in a more violent society which needs to take a long hard look at itself," said John Apter, National Chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales.

"We need officers to have the very best protection, and there must be a strong deterrent – that deterrent should be time in prison, no ifs, no buts."
