Decision expected on Remembrance Sunday event

25/10/2020 @ 08:02
Town councillors are to decide how to commemorate Remembrance Sunday in the town on 8 November.

Remembrance Sunday is normally commemorated with a parade in the town centre and a ceremony around the Cenotaph. It is then followed with a ceremony on Remembrance Day, 11 November.

Under Welsh Government lockdown regulations, Remembrance Sunday has been placed on a list of exceptions for when gatherings can take place.

These are called gatherings for a "very high" tier.

The regulations state the commemoration myst be limited to people as part of their work, those providing voluntary services in connection with the event, members of the armed services, veterans of the armed services or their representatives or carers, and spectators who participate in the gathering alone or as a member of a qualifying group.

Newtown Town Council will receive a report from the Town Clerk at its meeting on Monday evening when a decision will be made.

A smaller, socially distanced event will is expected to be held at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day, 11 November.
