BID support could be temporarily halted

29/06/2020 @ 10:02
Newtown Town Council could temporarily withdraw its support for the controversial Business Investment District for the town.

The BID project came to a halt after the company contracted to deal with it pulled out amid growing pressure from anti-BID group members and others.

A similar project in Brecon, being run by the same company, was rejected by local businesses in February.

However, plans for a vote in Newtown among businesses had been due to take place earlier this year. The BID project would need such backing to get the go ahead.

At a meeting of Newtown Town Council's Strategy and Corporate Projects Committee due to take place remotely on Thursday, councillors are to be asked to consider it "withdraws further commitment of resource until such time as the BID may re-start."

The proposal has been put forward by the Mayor, Cllr David Selby. If agreed, it would then go back to the main council meeting later this month for a vote.
