Over £9 million of spending money leaves Newtown each year, it has emerged.

Residents are travelling to other towns to shop and buy goods that could be bought in the town which has seen a number of high street stores close.

The figure was revealed in a planning submission by Aldi for its proposed store in Pool Road, Newtown.

It is understood the company gathered the information as part of its impact assessment.

The company said: “Whilst preparing for this application, we were shocked to discover that £9 million of spending currently leaves Newtown every year.

"We know that many customers currently travel out of Newtown to nearby Aldi stores in locations such as Welshpool, and we hope that a new community store in the town will reduce travel times and help keep trade local.”

The money includes spending on other stores, items and trade.
