Newtown's CCTV is ensuring the safety of residents, businesses and visitors, the town's Mayor, Cllr David Selby has said.

His comments come after he visited the Dyfed Powys Police headquarters in Carmarthen last night to see how the seven cameras in Newtown are monitored.

The cameras were commissioned as part of funding committed by the Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn and following a number of serious crimes in the town.

An old CCTV system had been switched off many years ago.

Cllr Selby said: "Yesterday evening I made a visit to the Dyfed Powys Police HQ in Carmarthen to see the CCTV Monitoring Suite. The CCTV cameras covering Newtown are monitored from there.

"The colour images are impressive, the night scenes look like daylight and there is a good coverage of all of the town centre from Broad Street to Shortbridge Street and High Street.

"A total of 7 cameras. I was reassured about public privacy issues as well as their ability to prevent and solve crimes.

"We were shown one example of a crime in Newtown solved with the the use of the cameras.

"I was pleased to see the way in these cameras are being used to enhance the town and the safety of residents and visitors."
