The number of passengers using Newtown Railway Station and the Cambrian Railway has jumped over the past three years.

According to the Office of Rail and Road's research, the number of rail passenfers using the railway in Montgomeryshire has jumped by 30 per cent on the line between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth.

The figures show passenger numbers went up by 23.5 per cent since the hourly timetable was introduced.

The figures show a rise to 185,000 from 130,000 rail passengers using Newtown Railway Station, while the number jumped from 49,000 to 69,000 in Caersws.

Transport for Wales has taken over the rail franchise from Arriva Trains. Despite teething problems due to the Winter weather, it says it will be investing in new trains.
