Police have named the five people who died when their car plunged into the Llyn Clywedog reservoir.
The driver of the vehicle, Denise Griffith, 55, surviced after managing to free herself from the car and swim to safety. Her husband, Emyr Griffith, 66, foster sons Peter Briscome and Liam Govier, both 14, and mother, Phyllis Hooper, 84, all died when the Peugeot 807 they were in was involved in a collision with a Ford Mondeo driven by a 23-year-old-man from the Llanidloes area on Wednesday afternoon. He has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The family, from Pontypridd in South Wales were on holiday in the area and were travelling back from Machynlleth when the accident happened at the Bwlch-y-Gle dam at Llyn Clywedog on the B4518.
The new has shocked the community of Llanidloes. One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "It's very, very sad. There was an accident up there about 16 years ago when a man died. To have this this sort of tragedy on your doorstep is very upsetting, especially in the circumstances. When you hear about a family dying in such a way you cannot but feel for them and those they've left behind."
Anyone who might have witnessed the accident is urged to call police on 101.
