A Llanidloes man has been celebrating his centenary.

Mr Fred Davies, of Llangurig Road, Llanidloes celebrated his 100th birthday last week and received a visit from Councillor Keith Tampin, Chairman of Powys County Council and Councillor Kath Roberts-Jones, Chairman of Montgomeryshire to mark the special occasion.

Born in Birkenhead, Mr Davies served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in Burma during WWII. He and his wife lived in Knighton and Llanidloes.

He was elected Mayor of Llanidloes in 2006 a month before his 90th birthday – thought to be the oldest mayor in Wales at the time.

The special occasion was marked with a celebration at the Angel Hotel, Llanidloes attended by his three daughters, son, friends and civic leaders.
