Two Newtown firefighters have raised more than £1,000 after spending a night sleeping outdoors to support veterans facing homelessness.
Station Manager Paul Armes and Crew Manager Simon Church, who serve in the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s Northern Division covering Powys and Ceredigion, took part in The Great Tommy Sleep Out on Saturday, 28 March. The pair spent the night in Newtown town centre and at Newtown Fire Station as part of the national fundraising effort.
The Great Tommy Sleep Out is organised each year by the Royal British Legion Industries. The campaign encourages people to give up one night of comfort to raise awareness and funds for former service personnel who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Money raised helps provide accommodation, mental health support and routes back into independent living.
Thousands of veterans across the UK are estimated to face homelessness, with charities highlighting ongoing challenges around housing, employment and support services for those leaving the armed forces.
Paul and Simon have now passed the £1,000 fundraising milestone, with donations from the local community and supporters further afield.
Reflecting on the experience, Paul said: “Taking part in The Great Tommy Sleep Out was both humbling and inspiring, it offered a small insight into the challenges faced by those without secure accommodation.
“While it wasn’t the most restful night’s sleep, with the crew and fire engine responding to a call during the night, we’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received.”
Donations to the firefighters’ JustGiving page remain open, with all proceeds going directly to support veterans through the campaign.
